Prof Alan T. Cheng is currently the Head of Department at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, part of the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network in Australia. He has been Associate Professor since 2012, and became Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney Discipline of Child and Adolescent Health since 2022.
He is the Director of the Airway Assessment Clinic and the paediatric otolaryngology fellowship in Sydney since 2005, and has published over 65 peer reviewed papers, and 13 book chapters on all aspects of pediatric otolaryngology. He is currently Ad Hoc Chairperson to the Paediatric section of IFOS since 2017, and currently the President of Asia Pacific Pediatric Otolaryngology Society. Prof Cheng continues to lead research in the field of complex airway surgery for laryngotracheal stenosis, severe sleep disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnoea, paediatric rhinological surgery and tongue base surgery for macroglossia. |

Beyond Adenotonsillectomy: When to Operate on the Nose, Palate and Beyond?
In the last 15 years, the contemporary paediatric patient with obstructed sleep disordered breathing (oSDB) continues to evolve, and a significant minority have persistent oSDB despite standard adenotonsillar surgery. The evolution of personalised medicine or Medicine 3.0/4.0 utilises differing investigative tools and the newer technologies to safely conduct effective management for OSA in some of these patients. Continued outcomes research is required to achieve evidence based management with these preoperative variates involving the nose, palate and beyond.
